Dear Smith family--
I was very sad to read of Jonathan's death today. I remember him for his dedication to campus ministries in old WNY conference--that is where I met him. He had lots of great ideas about how to reach those very busy students, and I tried most of them when I served in Alfred. And he served my grandparents' home church years ago in Cattaraugus...We will see him again in heaven--he has received the victory of Jesus that began at Easter. I will be praying for you all in the days and weeks to come. Grace and peace, Pastor Fran Hemstreet

Dear Diane, your husband was a friend and colleague to both Steve and me. Steve appreciated Jonathan's visit a few weeks before his death. I remember doing a church camp with him in 1979 at Camp Findley. Melissa, I remember you from swim camp at Watson Homestead. I called you "Flipper". So many years of sitting outside the sessions of Annual Conference chatting and commiserating . I will truly miss him.

Dear Diane and Family,
May your lives be surrounded with God's love and the compassionate sorrow of your many friends and colleagues. Thanks be to God that this is not the conclusion
for Jonathan but a stepping stone to God because of his faith, hope and love as he walked this earth. Grace and Peace.

My deepest condolences to the entire Smith family and Jon's closest friends.
It is hard to think of a world with out Jonathan in it. I am grateful for his many years service as my Reverend and spiritual guide. I gained such comfort from his wonderful sermons which he worked to hard to make relevant to todays world.
Most importantly, I will never forget my dear friend who always supportive and always kind. RIP Jon... until we meet again!

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know him very well but I enjoyed being around him- his very presence was a reflection of the love of Jesus. May the Lord draw near to you now and grant you comfort in the sadness of the space left in your hearts.

What do I say about my "baby brother"? A best friend who shared my love of Ohio State football! So many texts during the games. A wonderful and loving fantastic son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. My usual story about Jonathan is that I moved from our family home when he was 5 years old and we best friends while he was in Seminary in Delaware, Ohio - just up the became road from our home in Columbus, where he and Diane spent many great times with us. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, he brought much joy to so many people and I will miss him forever.
